David Cameron has announced the deal which will jumpstart the referendum campaign today. However, the referendum is not on the deal itself but the overall benefits of European Union membership.
The deal protects key areas of EU membership such as our access to the Single Market, protects the regional investment funds we receive, maintains workers’ and consumer rights, and will protect and enhance our security and role on the world stage.
Following the launch of the Labour In campaign in the North East, the Labour MEPs for the North East are ready to fight for the future of the United Kingdom in the European Union.
Jude Kirton-Darling MEP said:
“We are strongly making the case for our European Union membership.
“This campaign will not be won because of any deal done by David Cameron but by the clear long term benefits of being in the EU.
“It is important that we highlight the good the EU has done in the region, and the benefits we will only receive as full members of the EU.”
Paul Brannen MEP said:
“The North East is a net beneficiary of the European Union, we get more out more than we pay in.
“The European Union creates jobs and growth, invests millions in our region, protects our rights at work and as consumers, keeps us safe, and has helped us tackle climate change and protect our environment.
“Our membership of the EU is vital to our prosperity and security.”
